The Joseph Groh Foundation is a great organization that gives financial support to those in the construction trade who are living with life-altering injuries. Every year the association honors multiple recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.
Adil, originally from Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Three years ago, Adil suffered a massive stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the ability to use his left arm and it left his left leg greatly impaired, causing foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to degenerate and his doctors were concerned that he would ultimately end up restricted to a wheelchair.
Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial stress on the couple with four children, three of which were in college. They became optimistic when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that utilizes functional electrical stimulation to help a person in Adil’s situation walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they were not able to afford the equipment in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could understand how to use it.
Thankfully, a professional at WalkAid told Adil and Laila about the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the incredible grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing hope back to Adil and Laila.
