How to Know When Your AC Needs to be Replaced

August 29, 2016

Cool air is coming soon and your AC has survived another cooling season. But just because it made it through this summer doesn’t promise it will keep cooling the next time temperatures soar. Here are common signs that your air conditioner may be on its way out.

Not cooling your home

Your AC system is supposed to keep you cool and comfortable on the steamiest of days, so if your system is not keeping your home cool (and you’re unable to get comfortable) there’s possibly a problem. There are a lot of situations where your system might quit cooling – compressor failure, a wrong calibrated thermostat, or a refrigerant leak. Once you know the problem, it may be better to just let go of your little engine that could, and purchase a newer, more energy-efficient air conditioning system – hopefully one that keeps your family cool.

More Frequent Repairs

If you’re requiring AC repairs every cooling season, it may be time to face facts and buy a new one. Frequent air conditioning repairs are a good signal that your equipment is starting to go out and you don’t want to be stuck in the middle of the dog days of summer with a sweltering hot home.

Rise in Energy Bills

If you see a rise in your energy bills that could be a sign that something is wrong. If your air conditioner is working too much overtime, it could result in you working overtime to afford it, and it could be a better decision for you to invest in a more energy-efficient AC that can easily lessen your peak season energy payments.

Less Air Flow

If your air isn’t flowing as strong as it used to be, it could be a signal that your AC is on its way to breaking down. Take a look at your home’s air filters to make sure they are not in need of replacing and, if not, call a professional to help discover the problem.

Constantly Starting Up

If your system is always running, particularly if it’s not blowing much cool air, then you likely have a problem. It may be a problem that’s easy to resolve with a routine maintenance, but it could also be a sign that your AC has to work extra to keep you cool and comfy and that means wasted energy and wasted money.

Strange Noise

If your air conditioning system starts making weird noises, there might be a problem. Higher pitched noises may mean a problem with one of the motors. Rattling noises may indicate a part got loose. Don’t chance it. Call a professional to take a look and determine if it’s an issue worth repairing or if it will always be an ongoing issue.

Signs of Aging

As it is with everything (and everyone), the more something has aged, the weaker it ultimately gets. Is your air conditioner not cooling as efficiently as it did four to six years ago? Are specific rooms warmer or cooler than others? Is it taking more time to cool your home? These are all usual signals of an aging air conditioner. If your system is floundering and is approaching or over 10 years in age, call Golden Seal Service Experts and 630-246-2698 for a free in-home estimate and ask about our current promotions on energy-efficient air conditioning systems.
